Rental Practices

The College Community may be aware of a pending BCC legal matter concerning rental of campus space. Although the litigation prevents me from offering specifics about that particular situation, I do want the Campus Community to be aware that recently the College’s Executive Council reviewed BCC’s rental practices (to outside, non-College-sponsored organizations) and determined that weekend rentals of BCC academic space by outside groups (non-College-sponsored) should heretofore cease. The Executive Council’s action was framed within the larger context of cost-savings here on campus and included even some references to closing certain buildings on weekends, the possibility of a four-day workweek, and other weekend cost-savings measures. I want to assure the College Community that this action in no way precludes weekend activity that is in furtherance of the educational mission of the institution, e.g., College classes or a College-sponsored speaker or group on campus on a weekend and where there is a demonstrated educational or other academic benefit. In addition, please note that the Executive Council’s action was intended to cover weekend rentals by outside groups, not College-sponsored (educational) invitations to particular individuals or groups where there is no rental of academic facilities involved.
